Looking at ourselves and our own bodies can be a complex and nerve-wracking task. Especially since we live in a time where we are constantly being shown an overly filtered and fabricated view of what “beauty” and “style” mean.
The Kibbe Body System is a total image system based largely on a person’s physical balance of yin and yang (feminine and masculine energy/bone structure). The principle of Yin and Yang is that everything exists in inseparable and contradictory opposites. For instance, female-male, dark-light, and old-young.
There are 5 type families, each falling somewhere along two axes: yin/yang and sharp/rounded. (Dramatic, Natural, Classic, Gamine, and Romantic) Within each family is 2 types that either lean more yang or yin. Each Kibbe body type comes with guidelines covering all elements of personal appearance, including clothing, hair and makeup. The aim is to achieve a complete, harmonious look.
Having studied several body shape systems, I personally find the Kibbe Body System to be the most interesting and broadly inclusive of all body types. It has great merit, the best of which is how it isn’t corrective in nature. It is also one of the only systems where your body type does not change because of weight gain or loss. It actually has nothing to do with one’s weight at all. Your natural features and bone structure are the most deciding factors. It teaches one to view their bodies holistically and lean into and highlight what they naturally have!
If the definition of Style is a distinctive appearance, and the definition of Aesthetic is a set of principles that guide the work of an artist, then is fair to say that a Style Aesthetic is the soul of our appearance. It is the way we feel most ourselves in our clothing. Trends come and go, and it can be fun to play with those ideas, but we should know what is our core aesthetic and what we consistently feel grounded in how we choose to dress. It should feel personal, and something we know how to curate for ourselves.
It can just be tricky to narrow down what that style is within ourselves. I find it just as necessary to find our style aesthetic, and I do knowing our body type. Learning how to create a wardrobe that combines the two, can convey so much about ourselves and create a profound and authentic image.
I can help you determine if you are one of the following Style Aesthetics:
Classic, Natural, Edgy, Romantic, Casual, or Dramatic
